Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger does not see responsibility for the Ukrainian war only in the Kremlin. He criticizes the talks on the eve of the war about Ukraine joining NATO.
The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 recalled that as early as 2014, he expressed doubts about the plan to “invite Ukraine to NATO”. “That started a series of events that culminated in the war,” he added.
Speaking about the war in Ukraine, Kissinger points out that the war itself, as well as its conduct, is merciless. “The attack must be repelled and I support the Ukrainian and Western resistance. Russia must not win,” he said.
Kissinger still believes that “it was not wise to combine the admission of all countries of the former Eastern bloc into NATO.” Ukraine was also invited to join NATO.”
He said that he always believed that “Ukraine should have remained neutral. It should have had a status similar to Finland”. Now he thinks the country should join the Western military alliance. Entry should take place after the war.
“Today, I am absolutely in favor of the admission of Ukraine to NATO after the war. Now there are no more neutral zones between NATO and Russia. It is better for the West to accept Ukraine into NATO. Finland is now also part of NATO,” he said.
Kissinger also pointed out that he does not believe that Putin will use nuclear weapons in Ukraine. “But the more he gets to the core of Russian identity, the more likely he will be,” he points out.
Kissinger criticized the arrest warrant issued to the Kremlin ruler.. “Putin in court? Better not!”. According to him, it becomes “impossible or much more difficult to limit the war if the outcome of the war is linked to the personal fate of the political leader.”
