Federal prosecutors have an audio recording of former US President Donald Trump admitting to keeping a classified Pentagon document.
Reportedly, Trump kept the document about an attack on Iran after he left the White House.
CNN did not listen to the video, but said several unidentified sources described it.
The tape clarifies that Trump, who is seeking the Republican nomination in 2024, understood that he had taken the classified material after he left the White House in 2021.
Trump’s comments suggest he would like to share information, but that he is aware of the limits on what he can declassify after he leaves office.
A representative for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Peter Carr, a spokesperson for special counsel Jack Smith’s office at the Justice Department, also had no immediate comment.
Smith is investigating Trump’s handling of classified documents. Also, efforts to overturn the presidential election in 2020 when he lost to Joseph Biden.
